Dorothy Davis Birkner, 88, of Bay City passed away September 12, 2013. She was born February 4, 1925 in Wortham, Texas to the late E. C. "Buck" Davis and Myrtle Sanders Davis. She was a 1942 graduate of Bay City High School. After high school, she studied journalism at Mary Hardin-Baylor University. On September 11, 1943 she married Joe A. Birkner, Jr. in Riverside, California just prior to him leaving for WWII. Joe and Dorothy were Bay City High School'l first FFA President and FFA Sweetheart. She and Joe owned and operated Joe Birkner, Jr. Lumber in Bay City for over 50 years.

She served as a Bay City ISD school board member in the late 70's and early 80's; member of Junior Service League; member of Beta Sigma Phi, where she enjoyed many years as Rodeo Ticket Chairwoman; member of Bay City Study Club and Bay City Book Review and a member of Matagorda County Fair & Livestock Association.

Joe preceded her in death as well as her sister Joyce Davis Carr and nephew Christopher Carr. Survivors include daughter Mary Anne Birkner Harrison; granddaughters Stephanie Anne Harrison, Stacie Marie Harrison and Savannah Leighanne Gregston & husband Thomas and great grandchildren Malori Anne Munson, Kimberly Renee Mirelez and Joseph Michael Mirelez.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5pm until 7pm Monday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at the First Christian Church with Rev. Tom Quirk officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Please consider donations in her name to Bay City Public Library or the Matagorda County Museum.
