Obituary

Donald "Don" Frost Hollar, 88, of Gadsden, Alabama, joined his wife, Penny, in Heaven on Saturday, June 27, 2015. Don was born in his family's farmhouse near Gail, Texas on October 7, 1926. As a teenager he worked as a cowboy on a cattle drive, harvested wheat from Lubbock, Texas to Lincoln, Nebraska, worked at a hotel in Lubbock, and moved to San Diego for a job as a bellhop in a hotel. At age 17 he joined the Navy and served in the Philippines until the end of World War II.

In 1948, Don married Penny, the love of his life. He graduated from the University of Houston in 1951 while operating a Shell Service Station. They had their two children, and in 1955 Don went to work for Shell Oil Company. He had a 21-year career with Shell, which included stops in Memphis, Dallas, Houston, Davenport, Iowa, New York City, Jacksonville, Florida, and finally, Birmingham. In 1976, he resigned from Shell and purchased the Bellenger Oil Company, a Shell distributorship in Gadsden. He was active in the business until 2007, along with Wayne, Wes, and Zac, who still operate The Hollar Company, Inc.

Don was a member of the Gadsden Kiwanis Club, including a term as president, was a supporter of The United Way, The Mary G. Harding Cultural Arts Center, The Red Cross, and Big Oak Ranch.
Pallbearers are Wes Hollar, Zac Hollar, Gary Hollar, Don Hollar, Darryl Rickaway, Mike Patterson, Mark Murphy, James Rickaway, Jason McGhinnis, and John Winters.

He is survived by his daughter, Lorie Hollar; son, Wayne Hollar and his wife, Paula; grandsons, Wes and Zac Hollar and Zac's wife, Victoria; sister, Louise Hollar Murphy and her husband, Sam; beloved nieces and nephews; and special friend and caregiver, Gloria Thomas. Don was preceded in death by his wife Penny Hollar; parents, Elmer Wayne and Tama Pratt Hollar; brother, Frank Hollar; sisters, Ruth Hollar Rickaway, Lois Hollar Patterson.

Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Saturday, July 11, 2015 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Big Oak Ranch or the Humane Society.
