Obituary

Bobbie Jean Massey Oncken

April 8, 1943 – October 11, 2026

Everybody’s Aunt Bobbie

Bobbie Jean Massey Oncken, 83, of Van Vleck, Texas, passed away in League City, Texas, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of love, compassion, service, and a lifetime of treasured memories.

Born April 8, 1943, in Crane, Texas, to R.L. Massey and Olivia Callahan Massey, Bobbie devoted her life to caring for others. Whether serving patients as a nurse, supporting her community as a school board member, or simply welcoming someone with her unmistakable smile and cheerful hello, Bobbie possessed an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel special, valued, and loved.

A graduate of the Pasadena School of Nursing, Bobbie began her career as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in Bay City, Texas, serving patients in both clinical and hospital settings. She later continued her calling as a school nurse with Van Vleck Independent School District and Bay City Independent School District. Throughout her career, Bobbie brought compassion, kindness, and genuine concern to those entrusted to her care. Her commitment to education and public service extended beyond nursing when she served as a member of the Van Vleck Independent School District Board of Trustees.

Yet, among her many accomplishments, Bobbie will perhaps be remembered most affectionately by the name that became synonymous with her generous spirit: “Aunt Bobbie” and her chocolate chip cookies.

Bobbie never met a stranger. Her radiant smile, warm greetings, and genuine interest in others made everyone feel welcome. She had a remarkable gift for finding the good in people, lifting their spirits, and making them feel as though they were the most important person in the world. Her cheerful personality, infectious laughter, and unwavering kindness were gifts she shared freely throughout her life.

Bobbie is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter Oncken; her parents, R.L. and Olivia Massey; her brothers Jimmy Wayne Massey and Kenneth Wayne Massey; and several brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her sister, Winnie Massey O’Connell; her son, Brad McGonagle, and his wife, Amanda Hoover; her granddaughter, Brielle McGonagle; and her stepsons, Walter Todd Oncken and his wife, Tiffany, and Edgar Oncken and wife Karen.

She is also survived by her nephews, Donnie O’Connell, David O’Connell and his wife, Stacey, Dan O’Connell and his wife, Lanelle, Wayne Massey and his wife, Laura, and Darren Massey and his wife, Dawn; and her nieces, Patti Massey Bell, Julie Massey Mulkey and her husband, Tommy, and Michelle Massey Atkinson and her husband, Marshall. She also leaves behind numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, extended family members, and countless friends whose lives were enriched by her love and friendship.

The true measure of Bobbie’s life cannot be found in the years she lived or the positions she held, but in the countless lives she touched. Her legacy lives on in the patients she comforted, the children she cared for, the community she served, and the family and friends she loved so unconditionally.

Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 8888 Hwy 35 North, Van Vleck, Texas 77482 at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 16, 2026 with Rev. Chad McElveen officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. Interment will be at 3:00 PM at Weimar Masonic Cemetery in Weimar, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church, PO Box 497, Van Vleck, Texas 77482.
