Billy Merle Morton, 86 of Palacios, was born November 9, 1920 at Sloan Ranch in Matagorda County to Thomas Warren Morton and Irene Fox Morton. He went to our Lord on Wednesday, January 24, 2007.
Billy served in the US Army Air Force during World War II and earned the Europe-Africa-Middle Eastern (EAME) Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He also received the Purple Heart for injuries received serving aboard the Liberty ship, Samuel J. Tilden, when it was bombed during the 1943 Bari harbor disaster.
Mr. Morton worked as a Deisel Mechanic for Gulf Oil for 28 Years, and then worked for the City of Palacios as a mechanic for 15 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge # 990 AF & AM of Palacios where he earned the Golden Trowel award. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Palacios, Queen-Hamlin VFW Post # 2467 and the Palacios Volunteer Fire Dept. He was honored by the Chamber of Commerce as Man of the Year and November 9th is designated as "Billy Morton Day" in Palacios.
He is survived by his daughter: Teresa Blackwell and husband Eddie of Palacios; by his sons: James L. Morton of Palacios and Charles Braxton Morton and wife Pam of Willis; by his sister: Betty Fern Day of Deutschburg; his brother: Donald Morton and wife Joyce of Pecos; and by four grandchildren and two great grandsons. He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years: Delilah Wiley Morton; by his parents: Irene and Thomas Warren Morton; by his sister: Noreen Nelson; and by a brother: Lester Morton.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, January 28, 2007 at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Kopecky officiating. Masonic graveside services will follow at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing. Pallbearers will be Sammy Davidson, George Capak, David Blackwell, Leonard Lamar, Chencho Garcia, and Hudson "Cooter" Bates. Honorary pallbearers are Masonic Lodge Brothers, members of the VFW and Palacios Volunteer Fire Dept., Richard Sanders Johnson Wright, Mike Hunter, Keith Hunter, Wayne Hunter, Robert Christenson, Woodrow Wilson, Walter Day, Richard Day, Thomas Day, Allen Morton and Floyd Morton.
