Bernard was a life-long disciple of Jesus Christ and active in the United Methodist Church. He offered himself in service to many ministries in the various congregations to which he belonged. Faithfulness and integrity were hallmarks of his life.

Bernard was deeply devoted to his family. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria Mae, in 1980 and a granddaughter, Lindsay Ann Ray, in 2000.
