Obituary

Benjamin Franklin Powell, II, 88, a life-long resident of Bay City, entered into heaven on June 9, 2005. He was born to Ben and Lucy Bounelle Powell on September 8, 1916.

During World War II, he served as a Sergeant of the 250th Artillery Field Battalion from 1942 - 1945. He received numerous medals. After his duty, he returned to Bay City where he married his sweetheart, Ola Merle Grobe in 1945. They made their home in Bay City until her death in August of 1985. He then married Frances Loos in 1996. He worked at Phillips Petroleum and retired from there in 1978, after 35 years of service.

He loved his grandchildren. They were the joy of his life. He was a avid gardener and loved working in the yard. A member of the First Untied Methodist Church of Bay City, Wesley Class, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, American Legion and past president of AARP. He also served on the Matagorda General Hospital Board.

He is survived by his sons: Ben F. Powell, III and wife Marianne of Katy, Sam Powell and wife Connie of Willis; Step-son: Jim Loos and wife Lois of Houston; grandchildren: Bethany Powell, M.D. of Galveston, Michael Powell and wife Kim of Dallas, Meredith Powell of Austin, Melissa Burdette and husband Todd of Thornton, CO, Samuel Powell of Cleveland, OH; his great grandchild: Dylan Burdette of Thornton, CO; sister-in-laws: Edith Zander of Brenham, Evelyn Grobe of Palestine, Ruth Huse and husband L.D. of Weatherford. He is also survived by his God-daughter: Trisha Reichle and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife: Ola Merle Grobe Powell; his second wife: Frances Loos Powell; a sister: Lucille Powell Knowles; sister-in-law: Marianne L. Powell; two brothers: James Austin Powell and Sam F. Powell; and a son: Robert M. Powell.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boy's Methodist Home in Waco, Sunshine and Rainbows - First Methodist Church, or the First United Methodist Wesley Class of Bay City.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 11, 2005, at the First United Methodist Chapel in Bay City with Rev. Kevin Young and Rev. Michael Aus officiating. A Masonic Burial service followed at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Pallbearers were Michael Powell, Samuel Powell, Todd Burdette, Lee Reichle, Wayne Witte, and Harold Wade. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Wesley Class of The First United Methodist Church.
