Alice Matilda McEwen Sauer, 87, of Sugar Valley, passed away on November 18, 2007 at Gulf Coast Medical Center, Wharton, TX after battling pancreatic cancer. She was born on February 3, 1920 in Buckman Township, Morrison County, Minnesota to Harold Fiddis and Matilda Anne Kalis McEwen.
She graduated from Royalton High School and St. Cloud Teachers College. Alice taught in the Crosby-Ironton School District and Columbia Heights public school. She married Gerald Clement Sauer on June 14, 1952 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Royalton, MN.
They were stationed at various Air Force bases, eventually moving to Orlando, FL in August 1959. She helped found the Pinecastle Home Extension Club in 1968, serving as its first president. After her three children reached school age, she resumed her teaching career as a substitute teacher for the Orange County School District.
Gerald and Alice were active members of Blessed Trinity Catholic Church and the local Scotty Camping Club. In 1993 they moved to Sugar Valley, TX. Alice then became an active member of the Matagorda County FCE, Matagorda County Genealogical Society, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Sweeny, TX. After the death of her husband, Gerald, she became a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald, brothers Harold and Linus McEwen, and granddaughter Becky Stafford. Survivors include: son, Paul Sauer of Sugar Valley; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary & David Garner of Flower Mound, TX, and Karen & Ed Stafford of Sugar Valley, TX; granddaughter and husband, Melissa & Jason Jurek of Markham; and granddaughters, 1st Lt Mary E. Garner of Moore, OK, and Catherine Garner of Flower Mound, TX.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home by Deacon Wally Rodriguez and the funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 21, 2007, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Casey Jarzombek officiating.
Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Joe Labuda, Richard Stafford, David Bridgwater, Darve Smith, Mike Jacobs, and Stan Spurr. Memorials may be made to the Rebecca Stafford Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Van Vleck High School.
