Alfred Kopecky of El Maton, Texas died Friday, December 29, 2006. He was born in Wallis, Texas on November 4, 1912 to Frank Denton and Louise Schiller Denton.
He lived in the Sugar Land area until 1924 when his family moved to El Maton. He graduated from the Blessing and Markham schools and earned his teaching certificate from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos.
He married Julia Marek in 1936. They operated Alfred's Grocery in El Maton from 1936 to 1950. He farmed from 1950 until 1964 when he retired.
Over the years, he served on the Saint Peter's Catholic Church Board of Trustees, on the Matagorda County Hospital District Board of Trustees, and as an original member of the Board of Trustees of Tidehaven High School.
Survivors are daughter Mary Louise McCormack and husband Terry of Sugar Land, son Dr. Alfred A. Kopecky and wife Betsy of Victoria, six grandchildren, eleven great- grandchildren, one sister, one half-sister, and his good friend, Irene Smith.
He was preceded in death by Julia, his wife of 58 years, second wife Lorene, parents, stepfather John Kopecky, four stepsisters, and a half-brother.
The rosary will be Monday, January 1 at 6 p.m. at Taylor Brothers' Funeral Home in Bay City. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 2 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing, followed by burial at St. Peter's Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Emil Sliva, Joe Sliva, John Sliva, E.R. Vacek, Carlos Vacek, Weldon Popek, Johnny Popek, Johnny Thompson, and Manford Foster.
Memorials may be made to St. Peter's Catholic Church, Blessing or Saint Joseph High School Endowment Fund, Victoria.
