Obituary

Adele Ruth Guffey, age 92, passed peacefully in her home Sunday, March 17, 2019 to be with the Lord.

Adele was born February 25, 1927, to Fred and Agnes Maresh in Halletsville, Texas. She spent her childhood in a small farming community, attending and graduating from high school in El Campo, Texas.

Adele and Donald Guffey were married April 21, 1946, and soon moved to Bay City. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker while their children were in school, living in a small "Elm Street neighborhood" filled with young couples and their children. After raising their children, Donald and Adele owned and operated "Guffey's Grocery" in Van Vleck and Wadsworth. They worked long hours in the store together, making homemade sandwiches and Bar-b-Q for their customers. Adele loved serving her customers, considering them family.

Adele was known for her strong work ethic, good cooking, devotion to God and family, quick smile and infectious laughter.

Adele is preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Agnes Maresh; brothers Henry and Willie Maresh, and grandson Ron Guffey, Jr. She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Donald B. Guffey; sons Ronnie Guffey (Sherry) and Tom Guffey (Kelly); daughters Pam McCasland (Danny) and Pat Drenner (Frank); nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; sister Sylvia Maresh Miessler, and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends and relatives 6:00-8:00pm Thursday, March 21 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Funeral services are 2:00pm Friday, March 22, 2019 at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Frank Drenner III and Rev. Dr. Russ Munch officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. Pallbearers are Josh Guffey, Tommy Lieng, Randy Williams, UL Armstrong, Brandon McCasland, Andrew Reese, Jessie Reese and Ayden Reese.

Our deepest appreciation and gratitude to the caretakers who so lovingly cared for Mom during her final days: Mary Aguilar, Tonya Cortez, Bertha Fields, Margie Ballard, Jocelyn Washington and Christina Estrada. A special thank you to Pastor Russ and Carol Munch, for their weekly visits to Mom and Dad. Those visits of prayer and joyful songfest were the highlights of their days!

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions in her name to the First Methodist Church Bay City.
